Zoo to You Wildlife Discovery Centre

There is a new interactive wildlife experience in Cairns that our family is really excited about.  Zoo to You Wildlife Discovery Centre is located at Pier Market Place on the Esplanade (adjacent to the Lagoon).  Wildlife biologist and qualified teacher Jodie Creek has been conducting wildlife exposure experiences in Cairns daycares, kindergartens and schools for a couple of years now.  Her visit to his kindy has been the highlight of my eldest son’s year. Jodie’s dual expertise is clearly evident in the Wildlife Discovery Centre that emphasizes up close and personal experiences and education.

My first impression when we entered the Wildlife Discovery Centre was the impressive number and variety of animals on permanent display.  These include snakes, lizards, green tree frogs, small mammals and a number of beautiful aquariums displaying Great Barrier Reef favorites.  My one year old found “Nemo” (the clownfish display) very quickly to his delight.

Shows are conducted regularly.  We were blessed by being the only guests at the Centre on a Monday morning and my boys monopolized the time and attention of the wildlife handler, baby croc, and python that were in the show at that time.

A thoughtful addition to the Centre is the kid’s corning with computers, books, puzzles and beanbags for parents.  The kid’s corner opens the opportunity for quieter, reflective learning and some downtime for parents that are managing over-stimulated kids on holiday.

Admission to the centre is $8 per person, and $4 for children seven years and under.  As locals, we purchased an annual pass for $50 as I am sure the Centre will be one of our regular haunts on wet days as well as being an option for play-dates with other families.
