While it may not have been eons since I had a night away with just my husband it certainly seems like it. Since becoming parents 4 years and 8 months ago my husband and I had never spent a night together away from our children. That changed this weekend thanks to Thala Beach Lodge and local parenting magazine Pakmag courtesy of a prize I won last mother’s day. My prize was a night in one of Thala Beach Lodge’s exquisite Coral Sea Bungalows as well as dinner and breakfast in Ospreys restaurant.
Thala Beach Lodge is located 15 minutes south of Port Douglas in North Queensland, and what a gorgeous place it is. Situated on a hill overlooking the Coral Sea, local timbers, sculptures and artwork feature in the lobby. Our free-standing Coral Sea Bungalow was perched in the rainforest with sweeping views of the ocean. The immaculate service commenced the moment we arrived and were offered a luscious tropical fruit drink and continued until we left.
A short stroll down to the secluded beach and we found hammocks hung between palm trees and perhaps the most scenic picnic tables in Australia. A four level free-form pool, situated as it was among the forest was the perfect place to relax.
As for the meals in Ospreys restaurant; Delicious mains (I had the gnocchi and my husband the spatchcock) and categorically the best dessert I ever remember eating (a chocolate fondant). Our tropical breakfast included both a continental buffet and a la carte hot breakfast.
For the record – Thala Beach Lodge does welcome children. Each room has a king sized bed and can accommodate a roll-away. We have actually dined in Ospreys previously with our sons and they were warmly catered to despite some rather challenging behavior.
I have previously written about the potential perils of babymoon vacations away from medical care. Thala Beach Lodge offers babymoon packages and, located as it is a short drive from Cairns is my top recommend for babymoons in this part of the world. One tip for those planning a babymoon at Thala Beach Lodge is to request accommodation close to the main building as the pathways are rather steep.
My words to my husband as we left the resort: “Oh please let us come back here again.”

Such a gorgeous place, so glad you got to enjoy it with David and without the kids. Andrew and I had wedding photos taken in this palm grove.
A gorgeous place for wedding shots. As Annabelle gets a little older I am sure you will eventually get an escape too.
Looks heavenly! I’m sure you deserved a time away from the kids! 😉
Thanks for linking up!
What a lovely getaway for the two of you! I think someone might have had to pry me from the hammock to get me to leave!
I can see why you’d want to go back — it’s a dream place!
Isn’t it great winning things. I am so glad you got to go the Thala Lodge. I follow them on facebook and share some of their photos and always think how wonderful it would be…now I know!
Hi Jan. I haven’t won anything before but like you had seen some Thala photos and when I saw the competiton thought: “That’s it – I’m going to win this!”. I don’t know if it was the positive thinking but I’m glad it paid off.
