We had planned our trip to China’s north to incorporate a visit to Harbin’s annual Snow and Ice Festival so I was disappointed when a necessary reschedule meant we missed the festival by a week. Harbin, in the Chinese Province of Heiliongjiang hosts an annual Snow and Ice Festival that incorporates snow and ice sculptures, as well as snow and ice play at a number of city venues. The Snow and Ice Festival runs from early January to early March. Fortunately an unseasonably cool spring meant that many of the snow and ice sculptures at Harbin’s Sun Island were still intact during our mid-March visit.
We visited one of the festival’s sites, Sun Island just in time to witness these amazing sculptures. Bull-dozers were literally knocking these sculptures to the ground while we were in the park. While some of the snow sculptures were clearly past their prime many were still stunning. Entry to Sun Island’s snow sculptures was 120 RMB (about 20 Australian dollars) and entry was free for my pre-school aged children.
I am just so grateful that I had the opportunity to see these amazing snow sculptures, and who knows, we may make it back to Harbin one day to enjoy the entire festival.

Wow! These sculptures are incredible! I love the Sleeping Beauty one. How great that you were able to catch these beauties in time. It’s wonderful that people can enter the Snow House and snow play is involved too.
Those are absolutely amazing! I love the Easter Island heads the best. Glad you still got to see it.
