We recently experienced one of Melbourne’s newest attractions for kids at Up Unlimited in Moorabbin. As an add on to the clip and climb activity at the venue, guests can explore man made caves. Real, honest to goodness caving is something I’d love to do with my little ones one day. The caving experience at Up Unlimited offered us the opportunity to try caving in a safe environment for a discrete time frame (half and hour). The outcome – all three of my children are now hooked on caving.
For ten dollars each children get half an hour in the tunnels. I negotiated the caves with my three year old – who needed some help traversing them. My eight year old enjoyed exploring the caves on his own, and my six year old stayed close to mum for a little added security. For our first run through the caves the lights were left on – my more adventurous eldest child then chose to negotiate the caves with a head lamp, and finally in pitch black.
You might wonder how well these caves aligned with the real thing. I’ve done a little caving myself and we didn’t come out covered in mud, like I have before. I was pretty happy there were no bats in situ. Within the caves are fossils, stalactites and stalagmites. To be honest, although this is a simulated experience it approximated the real thing close enough for children. I’ll now feel comfortable with real life caving knowing the children don’t get claustrophobic in caves and that it fuels their sense of adventure.
Up Unlimited is located at 444 Warrigal Road in Moorabbin.

Great adventure for kids! This will be a good experience for my little ones. A good training spot when we go for the real thing on our next nature adventure. Just a quick question, how is the cleanliness? And one more, how many routes or caves are there in the facility?
The caving is lots of fun Ralph and was very clean – unlike a real caving adventure (good question by the way). One cave with a few pathways – it takes about 30 minutes to explore them all.
