It may not seem like a big deal to some but this past weekend I did the unthinkable and whittled my brood of accompanying children down to a lone baby for a weekend away. The destination was Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast and my husband had a “thing” to go to with me as his plus one. With no little boys to complain about going for long walks I was determined to put some miles of walking in. While this is anything but a dating site now seems the appropriate time to declare it out loud –
“I love long walks on the beach.”
Long walks on the beach lugging my chubby 10kg baby in a baby carrier during a heat wave not so much. This post is therefore dedicated to the humble Surfers Paradise boardwalk which is a fantastic place run walk or jog with a baby in a stroller. During our walks I was reminded of how simply stunning the Gold Coast Beaches are. Miles and miles of silky white sand and ocean that is patrolled for our swimming safety.
I know that Surfers Paradise cops some criticism for its imposing skyline and late night party atmosphere. I’ve got to say though that the skyline is rather fabulous, the beaches, even in the centre of town are amazingly uncrowded, and the people watching second to none. Every permutation of human shape and size were seen including many adherents to the cult of the body beautiful, holidaying families and oldies out for their perambulations. Some are there for a purpose, to exercise for example while others seem content just to be. The mood is overwhelmingly relaxed.
Growing up I spent my summers on the Gold Coast and I am grateful for the kilometers of beautiful coastline that we have in Australia and to the wildlife that make it home. I know that families flock to Surfers Paradise each year drawn by the great variety in accommodation and attractions such as the theme parks however for me, the stars are always the sand and the surf. I would spend my summers as a child, much as I did this weekend, swimming, walking and enjoying the view. Which views? The views of the ocean, off the bridge as we drove over Tallebudgera Creek and down the long length of sandy beach. The weekend was a reminder of how even in one Australia’s flashiest destinations, the simple pleasures there are first class, and, from my perspective the regions biggest drawcard.

I’ve never been there for longa nd would love to spend a week pottering about and visiting local places… would be easy with the teens these days… hmmmm…. I’d do my love walks sans kids too!
As a teenager I loved spending time in the surf, heading out on a boogie board past the breakers and floating there, only catching a wave when I felt like it. I am sure when my own kids are old enough they will love doing the same on the Gold Coast – just the idea of my little swimmers being let loose in the surf does make me anxious though. Motto of that little anecdote – do take your teenagers there, they will love it.
Nice Blog for travel thanks for posting in future to be continue
Whenever I have friends in town, I take them to Surfers. It’s glitzy and has everything you need. Putting the sky scrapers aside, the beach is superb.
I love that you just took a lone child to Surfers. You are a brave and wonderful mum. I also adore your photos, I can almost feel the peace and joy from the pics. I’d love to find the time to take better shots like these. xo
PS: If you’re ever in the neighborhood (I consider Gold Coast neighborhood) and feel like some company. I’d be there in a heart beat xo
Thanks for your kind words about my photos Rene – you know I am always a little self conscious about them. I do love the Gold Coast and always wish we spent more time there. I really think a Gold Coast Aussie mum travel bloggers weekend may be in order sometime soon! Would so love it.
