I briefly mentioned the Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World in a recent post recommending activities for families visiting Shanghai. The collection of underwater critters on display at the Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World deserve a post of their own as a result of their collective beauty, quirkiness, freakiness, and scariness.
This is a modest sized aquarium which suits families with young children perfectly. Signage was in English as well as Mandarin meaning we were able to inform our kids (and ourselves) exactly what we were viewing. Unlike some aquariums though Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World isn’t brimming with additional interactive educational displays – you know the ones – placards with multiple flip tops and scales that calculate your weight in fish food. We viewed this as a plus with our little kids who are too young to benefit from many interactive educational displays and tend to be distracted by them. As a result they spent the visit mesmerized by exactly what we had come to see – water life.
As usual I gravitated to the freshwater creatures, and in this department Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World outdoes itself as they display the largest freshwater fish in the world – the South American Arapaima. I couldn’t help but notice how these river monsters swarmed to the end of the tank where my little boys were watching them.
Other highlights were the sharks, rays turtles, jellies, and of course, clownfish. The aquarium wasn’t crowded allowing us time to enjoy ourselves and really observe these beauties.
Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World was a twenty minute taxi ride from our hotel near the Bund however it is closer for families staying in the French Concession area. One of the additional charms of a visit to this aquarium is its location in Chang Feng Park, a Chinese garden frequented by local families with young ones. A visit to Ocean world complements a visit to Chang Feng Park and vice versa.
Entry to Shanghai Chang Feng Ocean World is via Gate 4 of Chang Feng Park.
Thank you to Shanghai Chang Feng Oceanworld for hosting us during our visit to the aquarium.

Fun to read about your experience at the Shanghai Aquarium! You bring up a good point that sometimes it’s nice to just focus on the animals and creatures themselves 🙂
