My father has fond memories of fishing for cod off the Cunningham Pier on the Geelong Waterfront in the 1950s. He describes Waterfront Geelong in that era as being a derelict industrial zone. Not any more. The Geelong Waterfront is now a charming recreational area that, for families with young kids is worth exploring as a day trip from Melbourne, or a weekend mini-break. What set the Geelong Waterfront apart for me was the unusual combination of beautiful views, facilities for kids, public artwork, old world attractions, and lack of crowds. My kids had the run of the area on the stunning December Sunday of our visit which, if anywhere else in he world would have been teeming with visitors. Highlights for us were the marine themed playground, immaculately restored antique carousel and riding the Giant Skywheel. The Giant Skywheel is the largest Ferris Wheel in the Southern Hemisphere. It is currently located on the Geelong Waterfront just near Eastern Beach.
We were tempted by the blue waters of Eastern Beach, however having only just moved from Cairns we decided to wait for a warmer day to make the most of the enclosed sea baths and children’s pool located there. Similarly tempting was the aroma of fresh cooked sea food from the many waterfront restaurants. We will just have to come back.
Geelong is a one hour train journey from Melbourne or a one, to one and a half hour drive.
We stayed at the Geelong Mercure in a one bedroom apartment which comfortably accommodates a family of four.

The photos are beautiful. I have not really seen this part of Geelong. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Victor. This part of Geelong was new to us as well and we were really happy to discover it.
Just catching up with the blogs and love hearing about your transition south. Nice to know a family travel blogger in Victoria as my sister currently lives there – so who knows?
Thanks Bronwyn,
We are enjoying our transition despite a few hiccups. Feel free to say hello if you make it to Vic.
