Traversing the tea trees, boogie boards in hand I wasn’t sure what to expect from our first sand boarding adventure. It was a mid-winters day and the kids discarded their shoes the minute we reached the soft sand on the ascending side of the dunes and raced ahead. Suddenly my four year old raced back into sight – “It’s dangerous!” he shrieked. “We have to go back.”
I wondered exactly what it was that had prompted such fear. I soon saw it. As we crested the hill, a steep sandy descend that we were presumably meant to hurtle ourselves down on boards meant for the ocean loomed near. While not exactly terrifying, the prospect was a little intimidating, even for me. Thankfully we were with friends who led the way. Without hesitation our young guide, aged eight, with an arm in plaster no less, lept onto her boogie board and sailed down the hill. My eldest needed no further encouragement, following soon after. It only took five minutes for my previously terrified son to join in. What followed was an hour of some of the best fun we have had as a family.
Sand boarding, beach combing and swimming are what a getaway at Historic Avalon Homestead is about. Our own stay at Historic Avalon, a five bedroom holiday rental at Blairgowrie on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula in August meant swimming was out of the question, but that didn’t stop the kids wading in the chilly ocean up to their knees. For my own part, I couldn’t quite stomach the idea of hiking back up the hill carrying my toddler so left our own run down the dune till last, when it was time for us to wander the rocky outcrops below. While limited in her verbal abilities at present, Little Lady Bub expressed her delight at the run down the due with a huge open mouthed smile.
Sand boarding is one of those priceless childhood experiences that I am so excited to have just discovered with my kids.
Guests at Historic Avalon, one of the region’s original homes, and a five minute walk from the dunes at Blairgowrie’s Central beach are provided with the essential gear for sand boarding – the boards.
Historic Avalon is a substantial home, surrounded by olive trees (that guests are free to pick) and perfect for large families or family groups. We were toasty warm after our beach adventure due to the hydronic headers and open fireplace.
Historic Avalon has two bedrooms with queen beds, two children’s rooms with bunk beds, and a detatched studio with two double bunk beds. The decor is casual beach elegance and there are plenty of toys, books and children’s DVDs to keep them entertained between beach adventures.
It is just a short journey from the property to the Sorrento Foreshore (a good swimming beach) and classy Sorrento shopping precinct.
Our visit this time was too short – just a weekend, however I have a list as long as my arm of things I’d love to do next time we stay in the region including swimming with dolphins, cherry picking (in summer) and visiting the Peninsula Hot Springs.
The practical spaciousness, classy beachside elegance, and proximity to the absolute fabulousness of the Blairgowrie sand dunes make this an awesome property to add to my family accommodation recommends. If you want to discover sand boarding at Blairgowrie yourselves, and you like the sound of this holiday home you can book Historic Avalon at Blairgowrie on Stayz.

Our good friend’s own Historic Avalon. We received a discounted rate for our stay – paying in croissants and fruit salad. As usual I am only sharing my own views.

I’ll have to Pin this one to my Australia board as well! Sand boarding sounds like fun, and the area surrounding the Historic Avalon sounds very nice. Plus I’d love to see the outdoor studio!
Hi Jolanta. Thanks for pinning! Yes, the Mornington Peninsula is a gorgeous part of Victoria. Truth be told I just don’t know it well enough yet but I’m hoping somewhere down the track to be able to write a comprehensive feature about the region. I just thought the sand boarding was so much fun it was worth a write up itself.
I would love to try sand boarding! It looks like so much fun. I didn’t realise you could do it in Australia – have only heard of it in the sands of Namibia and Dubai.
Hi Shobha. I had only heard of doing it at a few specific places in Australia – Fraser Island being the main location. It was a great surprise to find sand boarding dunes on the Mornington Peninsula only 2 hours from Melbourne
I just love that picture of the sky at Mornington Peninsula! I’ve never tried sand boarding but it looks like a lot of fun! I will definitely have to try it with the kids!
Hi Katja,
Yep – it is heaps of fun. Can’t wait to try it again myself.
Where is this on the map? I’ve been trying to fin it with no avail. Surley leave a location or address for sandboarding.
