Whether you feel like giving your kids a geology lesson, or just visiting a hidden gem of a picturesque walking trail Organ Pipes National Park is worth a visit.  Formed as a consequence of one of the world’s largest lava flows the basalt columns have occurred as a result of cracking and cooling lava (over eons) and then have been exposed by the flow of Jackson creek.  Located in Keilor, and still in site of the Melbourne skyline Organ Pipes National Park is an easy half hour drive from the city.

Viewing the Organ Pipes (basalt columns) requires a fifteen minute trek down a valley where there are picnic tables and toilets.  The walk back up is very steep though and not really suitable for a stroller.  Walking with infants in a carrier is best.

What we loved about the Organ Pipes National Park

  • The beautiful spring wattle that was in bloom.
  • The kids loved learning about volcanos and geology.
  • The walk was manageable with baby in a carrier.
  • The ability to immerse ourselves into nature so close to Melbourne is amazing.
  • Jackson Creek was the perfect place for little boys to throw rocks.

The down side

  • Our kids embraced the steep walk back to the car park but I imagine some young kids would struggle.
  • The gates close at 4.30 pm which is really too early with daylight savings.

    • I hope your sister is going somewhere fabulous for you to visit and explore with your younguns. My own sister lived in NYC for 4 years and it was amazing getting to know that city with her.

    • I am LOVING daylight savings down here. I know plenty of mothers complain but I just put the kids in bed at the regular time – 7, even though the sun is high in the sky. I then have 2 hours to enjoy our garden before the sun goes down.
