December to February in Cairns is the hottest, wettest time of the year.  What a blessing to have an indoor activity to take children to during these months.  Little by Little Through Wonderland is an interactive art exhibition by local artist Hayley Gillespie on display at the Cairns Regional Gallery.  Described by the gallery aptly as “whimsical” the exhibition uses vibrant colour and oversized objects to reconnect adult visitors with their inner child and to engage younger visitors imaginatively.  This is a simple, fresh activity to do with your children.  There are no interactive computer screens here.  Rather magnetized paintings allow children to play an oversized board game and play pin the tail on the donkey.  I visited the exhibition with my two and four year old.  My two year old was probably a little young to engage well (although he enjoyed it) and the gallery staff graciously welcomed him despite his boisterous behaviour.  Older children will enjoy writing letters to loved ones, and drawing their own artwork which can be “posted” in beautifully painted letterboxes.

Little by Little Through Wonderland is on display at the Cairns Regional Gallery from 21st December – 17th February.  The cost is $5 for adults, children are free.

  1. Thanks for the post. We went today. Both kids had a great time. Miss 6 made a wonderful cake with the magnetic artwork and Master 5 loved the little cubby house are as you walk out from the lift. Thoroughly recommend

  2. We stumbled across this while we were in Cairns and really enjoyed it. However, I had to suppress my laughter overhearing the mum on the lower floor chastising her kids that they were no longer in the interactive part of the museum and to stop touching things.

    • You know, I was afraid my toddler would break the interactive part of the gallery, he was so full on. I couldn’t have coped if he started grabbing things in the rest of the gallery.
