Situated within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Green Island is a favourite day trip for snorkelers setting out from Cairns. Early this tropical winter we overnighted at the Green Island Resort, giving us extra time to explore the coral cay during a king tide. The term ‘king tide’ isn’t a scientific term, however it is used to describe an especially high tide event occurring twice a year, when there is alignment of the gravitational pull between sun and moon. The high tide of the king tide facilitated great water clarity for snorkelling while the low tide was perfect for introducing my yet to swim toddler to beautiful coral as we roamed the sea floor on foot.
A forty five minute ferry ride from Cairns, Green Island is a perfect day trip (albeit with crowds) however to truly appreciate the island and it’s impressive wildlife it is worth over-nighting. Green Island Resort is a small luxury resort hence when the ferries of day-trippers leave you remain on a stunning, rainforest covered coral cay. While the resort is pricey, inclusions include the ferry ride over and use of all recreational water activities (that day trippers pay for). The resort offer specials throughout the year and it is worth waiting for these to be advertised as they make an overnight trip to Green Island much more affordable. Our two young children were also included at no extra cost. By the way – the resort restaurant delivered excellent food and was very family friendly. The best buffet breakfast we have had in North Queensland was also delivered.
Highlights of the trip were the many sea turtles we saw grazing on sea grass. Marineland Melanesia, a small marine park on the island has the most spectacular collection of crocodiles we have seen in the Far North including the largest crocodile in captivity worldwide.

We went to Green Island for our Great Barrier Reef experience while visiting Australia. As daytrippers, we did not get around to doing everything on the island. It sounds like a wonderful overnight trip.
