Travel blogs illuminate new places to discover and explore. Today’s post introduces a location that I had never heard of – Imperial Beach in California (near San Diego). The post comes courtesy of Naomi Bowers who blogs over at Medical Mummy blog. In this snapshot of her family’s time at this Californian destination we are given some more inspiration for hopping over the Pacific Ocean and visiting the USA.
After the birth of our second child we went over to the USA for a holiday, my oldest was 3 years old and the youngest was five months old. We searched high and low for a nice laid back family holiday. We liked the look of San Diego but I wanted to stay someone right on the beach that was nice and quiet. Oh boy did we find it in Imperial Beach.
Imperial Beach is only 14 miles south of San Diego, and a two hour drive south from Los Angeles International airport. For us it is like travelling back in time. It has a population of just over 26,000. We loved it so much we went back again last year.
We stayed both times at the Imperial Beach Club which are beautiful apartments right on the beach. From our room overlooking the beach we spent mornings watching the tractors move the sand around and dolphins swim past whilst we ate breakfast. In the evenings we watched the sun set over the pier. We have stayed in two different apartments and both were beautiful and well equipped, the second time we were given floaties for the pool and beach toys were supplied in the cupboards.
Being able to go straight onto the beach also meant my husband could stay on the beach with our older child whilst I took the younger one up for a nap and I could still see them from up on the balcony.
Everything you could need is within walking distance with a wonderful fish and chips shop at the end of the pier (The Tin Fish) with the best chips and biggest beers you could imagine, beautiful ocean front restaurants, a playground, bikes to hire, and two ice cream parlours. We travelled from there to many beautiful destinations- Legoland, Disneyland, the San Diego Zoo all within reasonable drive time.
We plan to go back here again in a couple of years time, for us this destination offers us the perfect relaxed vibe that all good beach holidays should have.
