How do you know that you have well and truly left your youth behind you? When you find yourself at an iconic rock venue at 10 am on a Saturday morning watching a children’s music show. That was the situation I found myself in today as we took our three kids to see the Hi 5 House Hits show at the Saint Kilda Palais. The catchy kid’s pop tunes of Hi 5 have been my living room companion for the last 5 years or so and during that time we have seen the cast change. What has remained the same though are the bright costumes, young smiling faces, and upbeat dance routines – oh and the puppets Chats and Jup Jup. All of these were on display at today’s concert.
The Channel 10 TV show Hi 5 House is billed as being for 2-6 year olds. There was complaint from my newly 6 year old on the way to the theatre that we were taking him to a show for babies. Testimony to the show really is that within three minutes of it starting he was joining in, with a big grin on his face and eagerly awaiting his favourite song “Robot Number One”. He got his favourite song as well as other Hi 5 classics including, L.O.V.E love and So Many Animals. The show was the finale for outgoing cast member Lauren and we were introduced to new member Tamika.
Three year old Bub 2 thought the show was “great and good” but was a little disappointed the cast did not read him a story as they do on the television program. I enjoyed the show too – it’s always fun to have a dance with the kids and unfortunately this is as close as it gets to a rock concert for me at the moment. Hubby, who came along as support enjoyed revisiting the beautiful interior of the Palais, didn’t pay as much attention as other fathers did to his phone during the performance, and was somewhat sad to see Lauren leaving the cast as she is his “favourite” (remember this mob are on the screen of our living room a lot).
The big question on a travel blog – are Hi 5 shows (this is the end of this tour in Australia – their are two show in Bangkok on the 2nd and 3rd of August) worth traveling for? I’d have to say if you have a little one that is a fan of the show, and you live regionally, it is worth a trip to the big smoke to catch a Hi-5 show next tour.

Oh no, not for me thanks. This would have to be somewhere on par with water bombing 🙂 Plus the cute Asian girl (my fav) from the past isn’t there anymore. Actually, looking closer. I don’t recognise any of them 🙂 xo
A few friends had a similar responses when I told them I was taking the kids. I have taken them to a couple of kids shows that did feel like torture but this was was actually quite fun. I would really like to take them to other musicals though – Wicked and The King and I.
