I love having some special events/festivals up my sleeve to take the kids to. There’s lots of events that work well with kids this autumn. Here are my tips:
Heidelberg’s annual Arty Farty Fest commences on Sunday morning March 17 with a parade down Burgundy Street from 10 to 11am. The artistic fun then continues at Sills Bend Warringal Parklands Beverley Rd till 4 pm with stalls that engage children in arts and sensory play, and day of children entertainment. Entry to the festival is free.
KAOS at Anglesea
Kids Adventure Outdoors is an annual event on the Great Ocean Road during the April school holidays. The events allows children aged 3 to 13 to sample a range of outdoor adventure activities. Mini adrenaline junkies and nature lovers will enjoy this festival which includes options like high ropes, rock climbing, surfing, campfire cooking and geocaching. The event this year is held from April 13-14 and includes an optional camp out.
The Peninsula Picnic
The Peninsula Picnic is a music, food and wine event to be held at the Mornington Racecourse on Saturday March 30th. Featuring headliners The Rubens and Sarah Blasko at first glance this looks like a typical adult festival however kids are welcome with kids activities, rides, craft and more on offer.
The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.
This first rate event is on at the Royal Exhibition Buildings and Carlton Gardens from March 27 to 31st. As well as inspiring adult gardeners and florists with the most stunning exhibits of live colour and sensory indulgence the show also caters well to children who enter for free.
The Beyond Blue Charity Garden will feature outdoor playsets, flower crown & tiara making, drawing stations, a Funky Monkey Bar installation, face painting and a take-home show bag for all children who visit. Parents can also join in the fun with giant Snakes and Laddersand Jenga games or relax on beanbags in the chill out area.
The Nursery and Garden Industry Victoria (NGIV) will debut an all new educational kids zone where little ones can get their hands dirty pot planting, taking turnspedalling a bike that generates water supply, playing hide-and-seek site in a bamboo forest tunnel, climbing the log fort, and taking part inworkshops exploring the microscopic world of mini-beasts and the intricate layers of worm farms.
The Diggers Club will also host a sensory extravaganza in the gardens, where children can sample delicious heirloom fruits, explore a mini pumpkin field, count the colours of the rainbow in the veggie patch and frolic with clucking chickens.
The Moonlight Festival
During the Easter long weekend families can explore the stunning Boneo Maze and Gardens under the stars. This interactive family friendly event will transform the exhibition, maze and wetlands into a night time wonderland with activities, workshops and some spectacular lights and entertainment the entire family can enjoy 19th, 20th and 21st April 6pm-10pm. Sand Sculpting Australia’s Peter Pan exhibit will transform under lights and lantern displays from The Lanternist will mesmerise the kids.
