Throngs of mini Elsa’s in aqua frocks flocked to Melbourne’s Hisense Arena last night for the opening of Disney on Ice presents Frozen. Myself and my very own Elsa were fortunate enough to be among them. Commencing with a role call of Disney’s who’s who – Mickey and Minney, Nemo, Ariel and more carving it up extravagantly on the ice the scene soon changed to the Kingdom of Arendelle.
The story Frozen was enacted through ice dancing and a loud soundtrack in true accordance to the movie. All the stars were there – the best warning ever to girls to fall too fast – Hans, the curiously attractive Kristoph, Olaf and and giant (perhaps slightly scary) inflatable Marshmallow. My own Frozen fanatic adored seeing Elsa and Anna in the flesh- this was perhaps the best way she could imagine spending an evening. If there were parents in the audience that had previously wished to murder the ear worm that is Let it Go it didn’t show. Elsa’s rapturous solo of independence was embraced joyously by young and older audience members alike.
The highlights for me were the truly world class skating by both leads and ensemble cast members. Show stoppers (in addition to Let it Go) were the entire cast performances of In Summer and Fixer Upper.
Disney on Ice presents Frozen is feel good Disney family entertainment at it’s best. My only warning to parents wishing to take that good feeling home with them is to be wary of the merchandise, food and beverages. Expensive is an understatement. Catching public transport is also preferential to avoid traffic delays. A first for me – there was a pram concierge outside the event running as professionally as if they were parking sports cars.
