Disney excels at promoting imagination, fantasy and joy amongst children. Similarly they impress me as a parent with their attention to detail and excellence, be it during a visit to Disneyland in California or attending one of their touring productions. We were fortunate enough to catch Feld Entertainment’s Disney on Ice! Princesses and Heroes show on a recent visit to Sydney that delivered just the perfect mix of nostalgia, excitement and spectacle.
Disney on Ice! Princesses and Heroes saw the stories of eight Disney princesses brought to life through music and exquisite skating. At times, particularly during the big group numbers the performance was reminiscent of an old fashioned Broadway musical. My young sons are very comfortable embracing their feminine side and love the Princesses (particularly Ariel the mermaid). There was though certainly enough dragon fighting and princely action man posturing to impress even those little boys more sceptical of the princesses’ appeal.
The finale, incorporating pyrotechnics and saluting everybody’s favourite fairy Tinkerbell rocked the socks off the arena. As we left the building, carrying exhausted but happy children I heard a mother say to her teenager “This must be about our last Disney on Ice! Don’t you think hon?”
“No way Mum. Are you mad?” Her nearly adult daughter replied. Similarly, although this was our first Disney on Ice! production, I am sure it will become our own family tradition.
Most Disney on Ice! productions tour Australian capital cities although some regional centres are lucky enough to be on the tour route. For those that like us live elsewhere, a family trip to the city to watch Disney on Ice! will generate as much childhood excitement as a trip overseas to visit one of the Disney parks.
Parents can register their interest in Disney on Ice! shows with Feld Entertainment to make sure they are the first to know about upcoming tours.
