Thanks to our guest reviewer Dr Ivy Ong.
We are a family of Disney fans. As a child, my lazy afternoons comprised of me being glued to the TV watching Ariel sing “Part of Your World” on the VCR (remember those things!) It thus seems natural that my little Disney fans now watch Frozen on repeat and belt out Disney songs randomly. Needless to say, we were delighted to be offered tickets to Disney on Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic and to review the show on behalf of Danielle. Having been to Disney on Ice previously, we knew we were definitely in for a treat and what made it even more special was to be able to reminisce the older classics and enjoy the popular new characters as well. It seems really apt that Disney on Ice runs during winter as the kids and I excitedly rugged up to go to the Hisense Arena.
Almost all of us rugged up that is, as Melody, the princess of our family, who was undoubtedly the most excited insisted on dressing up as her all-time favourite Disney princess, Elsa. The excitement in the air was palpable as we took our seats. My 7 year old science buff marvelled at the ice rink and started asking a million questions on how it had been set up. The pre-show combined both modern and classic with Officer Judy Hops and Nick trying the mystery of the lack of electricity due to the blunders of old timers Donald Duck and Goofy. The show then opened with a bang with the all time favourite duo Mickey and Minnie in a spectacle of red and gold. Right from the start, 3 year old Melody was bouncing in her seat with excitement, naming all the characters as her favourite and declaring each and everyone of them as her favourite. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been for the producers of the show to pick the Disney characters they would include in the show as there are so many that are near and dear to the hearts of people. I must applaud them for the diversity of characters they showcased, starting with a walk down memory lane to Pinocchio, whom was obviously from the era of the parents in the audience. Up next came the endearing and forgetful Dory on her journey to find her parents. My 5 year old especially loved the host of dancing sea turtles Disney on Ice would definitely not be what it is without the Disney Princesses who came next with their princes.
The kids were thrilled with the Beast who transformed into the Prince and the skill of the princes who not only twirled and pivoted on the ice but also managed to lift their princess in a variety of different formations. While the boys remained in awe as they still use the penguin aids when we go ice-skating, Melody was becoming slightly upset as her favourite princess had yet to make her appearance. Her disappointment only lasted seconds as just as the words, “Where’s Elsa?” left her lips, the familiar tunes of Frozen came on and Princess Anna glided into the rink. There was just so much of the show we enjoyed from skating Olaf singing ‘Summer’, the multiple genies in Aladdin, the army in Mulan to Timon and Pumba from the Lion King. There is something so magical about the magic of Disney that it cannot be fully explained in words. Seeing your beloved Disney characters in person gliding across the ice makes for an incomparable, magical experience that will continue to be recounted for days in our household. We couldn’t thank Disney on Ice enough for this wonderful opportunity. To finish off, we’ll say Hakuna Matata and if you haven’t planned to see Disney on Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic, then it’s definitely time to just keep swimming onto the box office!
