All too often travellers use their travel tales as a weapon, to beat other travellers off the dais and have themself declared the most adventurous. I have neither the motivation nor the travel tale weaponry to do so. As a mother, and a pregnant one at that travelling with small children, adventure Is not so much about the grand experiences but the small ones.
Adventure is deliberately keeping my kids jetlagged when overseas so that we can enjoy a nocturnal cityscape together, instead of adhering to regular 7pm bedtime. It is about experiencing sunrises because I can’t keep the kids contained in a hotel room past 5.30am for fear of wakening the neighbors. It is about meeting the local wildlife, because that is what my kids love to do. It is about spontaneous overnight getaways, a short distance from home, because the home-life routine can be so exhausting. Adventure is meeting strangers on foreign trains that take the time to engage with us because they think our children are lovely. Adventure is splashing in the ocean, finding a beautiful shell, and having a snowball fight. Adventure is being reawakened to the wonder of the world through the eyes of my children.
Disclaimer: I make no apologies for the cheesiness of this post. I am after all a sentimental, pregnant mum.
