As a kid, on Sundays we would drive an hour and a half to Grandma’s house in Geelong. My parents dealt with a chorus of “Are we there yet” from four young munchkins in the back each time. The thing is, we knew that when we were finally there the food would be scrumptious. My Grandma would listen outside the baking tent at the Geelong show to the whispered critique of judges in order to perfect her own entries. Sponge and fruit cakes were her specialties although it was her scones that I loved the best. If I didn’t know better I would think that the owner of Jam and Cream, a hidden treasure of a cafe in Melbourne’s north must be a cousin of mine. She writes on her Facebook page “My Nanna did nothing traditionally. She grew weird and wonderful veggies, she made kites out of brown paper, she made gingerbread houses. Saturday was always baking day; pasties, spongecake, the old mincer and the wood stove burning away with gusto.”
Dining at Jam and Cream, which is open from 9.30 am – 4pm and serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea takes me back to visiting Grandma in childhood. Once again of all the scrumptious offerings my favorite was the scones. They serve an amazing 16 different type of scones and although I am a sweet tooth, I don’t think I could ever go past their cheese scones. For those that can’t decide there is the option of a scone selection which I recommend – but should be shared between two or three people.
Kids are warmly welcomed at Jam and Cream and have their own amazing menu that includes pink lemonade and pinwheel fairy bread. Although there isn’t a playground there is a pink caravan out back that you can dine in, a poultry enclosure, just like my Grandma had in her yard, and other bits and pieces for little ones to engage with.

Growing up in America, I never heard of Fairy Bread until just a few years ago from my Aussie friends in Malaysia. Jam and Cream looks delish, and my kids would adore that caravan.
That’s right – I forgot there is no fairy bread in the USA. Do you have hundred’s and thousands (the sprinkles)?
Ooh, I love it – right down to the pink caravan!
I actually wish I had the pink caravan in my own backyard.
Oh wow! Bet the kids loved this! I know my sugar lovers would adore this and the pink caravan.

Forget my kids – I loved the pink caravan!
