Split Point Lighthouse at Aireys Inlet
“Have you ever, ever felt like this? Had strange things happen? Are you going round the twist?”
The award winning Australian children’s television series “Round the Twist” only consisted of four series filmed over eleven years, from 1989 to 2000. This retro program about a family living in a lighthouse and experiencing a smorgasbord of magical occurrences is a big hit with my kids. On a recent trip down Victoria’s Great Ocean Road we stopped off at the Split Point Lighthouse, located at Airey’s Inlet and the lighthouse used in Round the Twist. For history buffs there is much more to the Split Point Lighthouse that the Round the Twist series. Built in 1891 the Split Point Lighthouse has a long history of directing boats away from the rugged coastline. Historical tours of the lighthouse that last for 45 minutes are available however as children must be 5 years or older, and our youngest is 2 we gave the tour a pass. Instead we contented ourself with meandering around the headland path overlooking the spectacular coast with the kids reminiscing about their favourite Round the Twist episodes.
Guided tours of the Split Point Lighthouse are available on weekends and school holidays, from 9am-5pm in summer and from 11 am-3pm in winter.
No I did not know you could visit the lighthouse. Just saying those words “Have you ever ever felt like this”, takes me back to the kids watching it on ABC Television. I am sure even though they are both in their 20’s today they would love to visit.
My kids love the show – I missed it as a kid myself. Far too catchy a song too – gets in my head all the time.
I know. Whenever I hear that song I get a happy feeling though – must have been a happy period 🙂
What a stunning looking lighthouse but those coastal views are just as gorgeous. That series sounds so interesting I’m going to have to look for it on youtube. How cool to live in a lighthouse.
